Beyoncé wanted to be in a band with Jack White — and what Beyoncé wants, Beyoncé gets.

The White Stripes frontman talked about meeting up with the star on NPR’s All Things Considered, where he said, “I just talked to her … and she said, ‘I wanna be in a band with you.’ I said, ‘Really? Well, I’d love to do something.'”

The two then teamed up for Lemonade track “Don’t Hurt Yourself,” a rage-filled, blues-tinged rock song featuring lyrics like, “Who the f— do you think I is? / You ain’t married to no average bitch, boy.”

“She took just sort of a sketch of a lyrical outline and turned it into this most bodacious, vicious, incredible song,” White explained. “I don’t even know what you’d classify it as — soul, rock and roll, whatever it is. ‘Don’t Hurt Yourself’ is incredibly intense. I’m so amazed at what she did with it.”

“Don’t Hurt Yourself” went on to debut at No. 28 on Billboard’s Hot 100. Hear White’s NPR interview below.
