Saturday Night Live recently shed a few cast members over the summer — goodbye, Taran Killam, Jay Pharaoh, Jon Rudnitsky — and one of the new additions is coming from behind SNL’s cameras.

Mikey Day, one of the show’s writers (and a co-writer of the popular “Close Encounter” sketch from earlier this year), will join the cast for season 42, EW has confirmed.

Day, who trained at the Groundlings, was a cast member of Wild ‘n Out, and his other credits include Maya & MartyRobot Chicken, and The Underground; he also starred in the short-lived NBC adaptation of the British comedy Kath & Kim.

In addition, Day co-wrote the indie comedy Brother Nature (which hits VOD today) with Killam, who also stars in it with fellow SNL vet Bobby Moynihan.

NBC declined to comment on the casting. Announcements are expected in the coming week, as SNL gets ready to kick off season 42 on Oct. 1.
