It’s been five years since Hotel Rwanda director Terry George helmed his last project, the Brendan Fraser-starring Stand Off, and now, he’s returning to the big screen with an in-depth look at the Armenian genocide of World War I.

The first trailer for The Promise introduces Oscar Isaac as an Armenian medical student named Michael Boghosian, who travels to study in Constantinople. There, he meets American photojournalist Chris Myers (Christian Bale) and French-Armenian artist Ana (Charlotte le Bon), only to get swept up in a passionate love triangle. But as Ana and Michael grow closer, the crumbling Ottoman Empire forges an alliance with Germany and begins targeting ethnic minorities, waging genocide against all Armenians in the area.

Written by George and Robin Swicord, The Promise will premiere Sunday at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, which runs through Sept. 18. Watch the first official trailer above.
