Jason Aldean has broken his silence on a controversial photo that showed the country star wearing blackface as part of a Halloween costume last year.

“In this day and age people are so sensitive that no matter what you do, somebody is going to make a big deal out of it,” he told Billboard in a new interview. “Me doing that had zero malicious intent.”

Last November, a photo of Aldean dressed as Lil Wayne was slammed for being racially insensitive, as Aldean used makeup to darken his skin in an attempt to replicate the rapper’s appearance. The country star made no comment on the costume at the time, but his representatives did confirm it was Aldean in the photo.

“I get that race is a touchy subject, but not everybody is that way,” the singer said to Billboard of the blackface costume. “Media tends to make a big deal out of things. If that was disrespectful to anyone, I by all means apologize. That was never my intention. It never crossed my mind.”

Aldean’s new album, They Don’t Know, is out on Friday.
