Katy Perry: Orlando shooting survivor surprised by singer on Ellen Show
Months after surviving the deadly mass shooting at Orlando gay nightclub Pulse, Tony Marrero went on The Ellen DeGeneres Show to discuss his experience — and then he got support from his musical icon, Katy Perry.
Marrero told DeGeneres that Perry’s music, particularly the song “Rise,” had provided an important source of inspiration to him. In her typically cheeky style, DeGeneres asked Marrero, “Have you met Katy yet? Would you like to meet her?” Then she motioned for the pop star to join them from off-stage. Perry’s meeting with Marrero was extremely emotional, and both of them started crying.
“Life isn’t easy and you need little reliefs, through songs possibly,” Perry told Marrero and DeGeneres. “I’m happy to be a joy, I’m happy to be a light, I’m happy I could be there in my own little way to help you.”
Perry topped it off by offering to pay for Marrero’s first year at film school.
