In the first trailer for Matthew McConaughey’s adventure drama Gold, striking it rich is only half the battle — the other half is staying that way.

Directed by Stephen Gaghan (Syriana) and loosely based on the Bre-X mining scandal of the 1990s, the film stars McConaughey as Kenny Wells, a down-and-out prospector who teams up with a canny geologist (Edgar Ramirez) to unearth a massive gold deposit in the jungles of Borneo.

As Wells says in the trailer, “It’s amazing how a little gold dust can just change everything,” but his newfound success also catches the attention of some very powerful parties, from Wall Street to the FBI to the Indonesian military.

If Wells has his work cut out for him, McConaughey did too. The Oscar-winning actor gained more than 40 pounds and sported a receding hairline to play the character, whom he recently described to EW as “an indomitable spirit and dreamer. I felt like I knew him from the inside out.”

Gaghan said the film shows a new side of his leading man: “He’s still charismatic and charming, but he really, he went all in to create this guy, and I think he knocked it out of the park.”

Gold opens Christmas Day. Watch the trailer below, via Vulture.
