Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2: Vin Diesel blown away by new footage
Groot sat down with director James Gunn to give his first thoughts on the upcoming sequel
Guardians of the Galaxy star Vin Diesel got a sneak preview of the upcoming sequel and he isn’t holding back his praise.
Diesel, who plays the lovable living tree Groot in the franchise, took to Facebook Live on Friday to share his thoughts on new footage he just finished watching from what will likely be another Marvel juggernaut. “I need a minute here, guys.” said Diesel to start out the fanfare. “The first word that comes to mind is ‘necessary.’” Director James Gunn joined the actor, revealing that Diesel is not only the first person to see the footage, but also the first member of the cast. “It’s a bit of what we saw at San Diego Comic-Con, but it’s more,” said Gunn.
Fans attending the summer event were able to see a portion of the discussed footage, including glimpses of Baby Groot and the monstrous Ravagers, but Gunn didn’t want to post the footage online, saying at the time it “will eventually be seen by the public, but in a more finished form.”
The Fast 8 actor took time to call out each of his costars in the film, starting with Star Lord. “I think Chris Pratt was born to play Peter Quill,” said Diesel. “Plain and simple.” Gunn has previously stated that the search for Pratt’s character was an arduous process, and his casting came after months of hesitation to let the actor even audition. “‘That’s the chubby guy from Parks and Rec — you’ve got to be kidding,”’ the director, revealing his reaction to the movie’s casting director, told EW in 2014. “Eventually, she somehow tricked me. He came in and I knew within 20, 30 seconds he was the guy.”
Also under discussion was the iconic female member of the Guardians gang, Gamora. “In this movie I really feel like we give the female characters a chance to shine, because Zoe Saldana comes in and she is so wonderfully beautiful as her character. It’s touching,” said Gunn, referring to Saldana’s role in the Marvel universe. “Then, Karen Gillan as Nebula comes in, as her sister, and is a much deeper character than in the first movie.”
New cast member Kurt Russell has previously worked with Diesel on Furious 7, but the respect seems to run deep for both actors. “Kurt Russell is one of my gems in the Fast franchise,” said Diesel. “When you see someone that enthusiastic about the character that they play, it’s infectious. It makes everyone pick up their game.” Gunn goes on to explain that his choice for Russell came after getting Diesel’s thoughts on the actor, and from the advice of Pratt.
The details of Vol. 2 are still well under wraps, but both Gunn and Diesel remind fans of the true heart of the story for them. “The first movie was about becoming a family,” said Gunn. “This one is about being a family.” Both stars sign off with the tease that the sequel is coming soon. “I’m blown away,” said Diesel as a final note. “Just hold on. May 5 is coming.”
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 flies into theaters on May 5, 2017.
