The excellence of Stranger Thingschild actors can sometimes obscure the fact that plenty of adults do great work on the show as well, even if their jobs were a little less fun than the kids’. Winona Ryder, for example, stars as Joyce Byers, a small-town mother who descends into paranoia and hysteria after her son Will (Noah Schnapp) goes missing in the first episode.

“For the first five out of the eight episodes, I’m pretty hysterical,” Ryder told Jimmy Kimmel on Thursday night’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live. “As I think any parent would be in those circumstances. So it’s weird. It was a very fun shoot, but it was a weird fun because I’m quite old-school in my approach.”

Crying so much on screen can be tougher than it looks. The human body only has so much water in it at a time, after all, and Ryder said she wasn’t able to use a tool actors sometimes utilize to help with tears.

“I’m allergic to the stuff that they blow in actors’ eyes sometimes when they’re out of liquid in their body,” Ryder said. “You have to be really hydrated to cry that much. But I had to cry for real, so it was quite hard. It was hard. But it was rewarding.”

Stranger Things season 2 is set to debut in 2017. Watch the clip below.
