In celebration of the home release of The Jungle Book, Disney takes us behind the awe-inspiring visuals with GIFs that track the different stages of special effects work.

Mowgli actor Neel Sethi was the only live-action character in the film, and he had to shoot his scenes on soundstages opposite reference points. The VFX crew then used their movie magic to insert Bagheera, Shere Khan, and the other inhabitants of the jungle into the film.

This process is illustrated in the below GIFs, tracking the evolutions of four different shots. First, we see a touching moment between Mowgli and Bagheera (voiced by Ben Kingsley).

The second pair spotlights Mowgli’s “Bare Necessities” sing-along with Baloo (Bill Murray).

Idris Elba, Scarlett Johansson, Lupita Nyong’o, and Christopher Walken are some of the other actors who lent their voices to the animals, as shown in previous making-of footage.

The Jungle Book is now available on DVD, Blu-ray, Digital HD, and Disney Movies Anywhere. Fans can take a deeper dive into the special effects through the bonus features, which include discussions with director Jon Favreau, producer Brigham Taylor, and VFX supervisor Robert Legato.

The team will do this all again as Disney already set plans for a sequel into motion.
