Empire strikes back!

The Fox series had some dips in season 2 but the cast and crew are confident season 3 will erase all those memories. “The great part about that is through the suffering comes a great season because I really think season 3 is off the chain,” says co-creator Lee Daniels. “We learned from our mistakes.”

EW has been in the writers room, on set, and seen the first episode and can attest Empire is back on solid ground. Don’t believe us? Then watch this exclusive clip from the second episode, airing Sept. 28 at 9 p.m., in which Cookie (Taraji P. Henson) first meets politician Angelo Dubois (Taye Diggs) at a radio event with her son Jamal (Jussie Smollett). It’s classic Cookie.

Season 3 of Empire premieres Sept. 21 at 9 p.m. on Fox.

Lee Daniels and Danny Strong created this Fox drama about a kingpin of hip-hop (played by Terrence Howard) and his family, who fight him for control of the empire.
