Star Trek (1966 TV series)

Fifty years after the original Star Trek first arrived on television, is there anything about Gene Roddenberry’s space opera that hasn’t been uncovered? Plenty! On Dec. 13, fans can purchase Star Trek: The Original Series – The Roddenberry Vault, a new three-disc Blu-Ray collection featuring footage from the cutting room floor, long preserved in film canisters by the Roddenberry Estate. The collection includes 12 classic episodes alongside a wealth of new material, including three documentaries combining unseen footage from the vault with new interviews featuring people who worked on Star Trek as well as famous fans.

The three documentaries are:

  • Inside the Roddenberry Vault, in which Rod Roddenberry (son of Gene) takes viewers on a guided tour through long-lost film reels.
  • Star Trek: Revisiting a Classic, which looks back at the beginnings of the original series and promises to include a glimpse of life on the set.
  • Strange New Worlds: Visualizing the Fantastic, a feast for Trekkie tech-heads that explores some of the franchise’s key special effects, like the spaceships and the transporters.

The set features new interviews with writers D.C. Fontana, David Gerrold, and John D.F. Black; guest actors Clint Howard, Leslie Parrish, and Elinor Donahue; fans like Big Bang Theory co-creator Bill Prady and Bill Nye; and Captain Kirk himself, William Shatner.

All this, plus 12 iconic episodes of the original series: “The Corbomite Maneuver,” “Arena,” “Space Seed,” “This Side of Paradise,” “The Devil in the Dark,” “The City on the Edge of Forever,” “Operation – Annihilate!”, “Metamorphosis,” “Who Mourns for Adonais?,” “Mirror, Mirror,” “The Trouble with Tribbles,” and “Return to Tomorrow.”

Rod Roddenberry will be at Star Trek: Mission New York this Saturday, showing off some never-before-seen clips. The set will arrive in stores on Dec. 13, but you can see two clips from the Blu-Ray right now!
