Matthew McConaughey: Sea of Trees flops
- Movie
The Sea of Trees has been slashed and burned at the box office. In its first six days of release, the new drama starring Matthew McConaughey and directed by Gus Van Sant grossed just $2,894 in two theaters, according to Box Office Mojo.
Filmed in 2014, Sea of Trees stars McConaughey as an American math professor who contemplates taking his own life in Japan’s Aokigahara forest, a destination notorious for its popularity as a suicide site. Naomi Watts plays his late wife, and Ken Watanabe portrays a man he meets in the woods. Chris Sparling wrote the script.
The film, which reportedly cost about $25 million to make, premiered at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, where it was booed and poorly reviewed. Roadside Attractions and Lionsgate initially acquired U.S. distribution rights, but the film sat on the shelf until A24 picked it up in June.
Sea of Trees is expanding to 101 theaters this weekend and is also available on VOD. Watch the trailer below.
