Supernatural: First photos from season 12

When season 11 of Supernatural ended, the only thing more surprising than Sam being shot was the return of Mary Winchester, otherwise known as Amara’s gift to Dean.

In the first photos from season 12, below, the Winchester brothers remain separated as Dean deals with the return of his mother — who can be seen wielding an angel blade — and Sam is tortured by the British Men of Letters. Also pictured? Castiel, who finds himself on the road with Dean and Mary. Not surprisingly, things get bloody fast…for both brothers.

Supernatural season 12 kicks off Thursday, Oct. 13 at 9 p.m. ET on The CW.
