Kevin Bacon does a pretty mean Tom Petty impression, one host Jimmy Fallon took good advantage of when he appeared on The Tonight Show Monday.

Appearing in a Behind the Music-inspired segment called First Drafts of Rock, the pair stepped into a way-back machine to perform an early draft of Petty’s classic, “Free Fallin’,” originally (by this telling anyway) titled “Free Horses.”

A lesser actor may not have been able to keep a straight face as the lyrics became increasingly ridiculous, but Bacon’s ability to power through earnestly is rather remarkable. See for yourself in the clip below.

Bacon currently stars in I Love Dick, a pilot recently released on Amazon.
