The animated Rebels series is overflowing with hints and references to other tales from Star Wars, and a featurette on the upcoming Blu-ray will underline all the hidden connections.

Included here is a sample from the doc, Connecting the Galaxy, which shows how the Disney XD show is paying homage to both the past and the present of the struggle between the light and dark sides of the Force.

Executive Producer Dave Filoni has also made a habit of referencing behind-the-scenes elements of the movies, and given the effect that the late concept artist Ralph McQuarrie is still having on the Star Wars universe, it’s no surprise that he finally got a character named after him.

Even eagle-eyed fans who spotted most of these allusions the first time around may have missed some of the more subtle connections, such as the origin of Princess Leia’s costume on the show, which explores the rise of the Rebellion during the period between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope.

The Blu-ray is out Tuesday and also includes a deep dive into the relationship between Darth Vader and his former padawan trainee Ahsoka Tano, a story which began on Filoni’s earlier The Clone Wars series — and may still be unfinished.

Season 3 of the series premieres on Disney XD on Sept. 24 and marks the re-canonization of another fan-favorite from the Star Wars Legends world — the red-eyed, blue-skinned Imperial leader known as Grand Admiral Thrawn.
