LAX airport: Josh Gad, Lester Holt tweet during false shooter report
Reports of a shooting at LAX airport late Sunday were proven just to be loud noises, but that doesn’t mean the chaos that broke out wasn’t a harrowing experience for hundreds of passengers.
Frozen actor Josh Gad and NBC Nightly News anchor Lester Holt were among those who evacuated the airport after reports of gunfire and an active shooter in Terminals 6, 7, and, 8 around 8:45 p.m. local time. Many passengers in other terminals were evacuated onto the tarmac.
“At #LAX right now. Chaos. [Cops] with rifles everywhere,” Gad tweeted. “Cops literally raided the terminal screaming to get out. Got my kids and ran for dear life. Thank God it appears to be nothing. Still awful.”
“Arriving at LAX off flight when people started pouring out of term 4 onto Tarmac. Security said ‘shots fired. Run!’ Now in vehicle on taxiwy,” Holt posted. “Witness tells me she heard ‘pops’ in lax term 4. Others say they just heard ‘run!’ Those evacuated to Tarmac just allowed back in.”
Thirty minutes later, at 10 p.m., Holt posted again: “Safely off the LAX Tarmac. PD search of terminals yields no confirm of shots fired. I heard ‘run’ as crowd ran toward us but no shots.”
“Report of shooting at LAX proven to be LOUD NOISES only,” commanding officer of Los Angeles police media relations Andy Neiman said in a tweet. “No Shots Fired No Injuries investigation continues to locate source.”
As police investigated, flight operations were stopped for 30 minutes, and all terminals were cleared and passengers allowed to return by 10:45 p.m.

“This was probably an incident resulted to some kind of mischief or misunderstanding of some young individuals that were in the terminal area,” Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said on radio station KNX-AM (1070), per the Los Angeles Times. “It’s almost like a game of telephone, by the time people were hearing things, I think they heard it was an active shooter… that’s when chaos can break out.”
