VMAs 2016: DNCE wins Best New Artist
DNCE won their first ever VMA Award Sunday when they took home the Moonman for Best New Artist.
“First and foremost, thank you so much to the fans all across the world” frontman Joe Jonas said accepting accepting their statue. “We’ve been doing this for over 10 years, individually, and it just proves that you continue to evolve as an artist.”
Bryson Tiller, Danish singer Lukas Graham, Swedish pop sensation Zara Larsson, and Desiigner were all nominated alongside the dance pop group. During the pre-show, MTV announced that the Tiller and DNCE were the top two contenders in the fan-voted category.
DNCE broke out last year with “Cake By The Ocean.” Frontman Joe Jonas recently told EW that the secret to the song’s success was that the group broke all the rules when it came to writing. “We didn’t stress too much about having it follow the rules of songwriting,” he said. “I’m sure other songwriters would peek into the room and be like, ‘What are they doing?’ But we kind of [threw] that out the window, and we’re glad we did.” The band’s debut album is expected to drop later this fall.
