Teyana Taylor made a splash as the star of Kanye West’s new sweat-soaked, Flashdance-inspired music video for “Fade,” which premiered during MTV’s 2016 Video Music Awards on Sunday evening. But that moment wasn’t the first time the 25-year-old recording artist graced the MTV airwaves in an uninhibited ’80s-themed production.
As noted by New York Times music critic Jon Caramanica, Taylor starred in a 2007 episode of My Super Sweet Sixteen, the reality show chronicling the over-the-top birthday parties of wealthy teens.
Filmed shortly after Taylor signed to Pharrell Williams’ Star Trak record label, the episode depicts her as a “sassy, one-of-a-kind New Yorker” planning an old-school hip-hop extravaganza.
“I talk a big game about how fresh I am, but now I’ve got to back it up by having the craziest, wildest sweet 16 Harlem has ever seen,” Taylor says on the show.
Highlights of the episode include invitations delivered via ice cream truck, a skate-ramp-related tantum, $700 sneakers (“That’s not bad,” Taylor says), and an appearance by Pharrell himself.
