This year’s VMAs had no hosts, but Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele acted as announcers during the opening segment, playing their characters @TheShamester and @LizardSheeple.

As the social media stars, Key and Peele commented on the VMAs broadcast, which began with a performance from Rihanna. Their jokes, however, split viewers on Twitter, with some criticizing the sketch for being light on laughs.

Before the show, VMAs executive producer Jesse Ignjatovic told EW the decision to forgo traditional hosts and instead of Key and Peele play characters was born out of interest in television events this summer such as the Olympics and the Democratic and Republican National Conventions. “Every year we try to reflect what’s going on culturally,” he said. “It felt like a unique approach to the show.”
