Wanna see how ghosts are made? It’s more than just sparking the ley lines. A new VFX breakdown from effects house Iloura goes through the different phases of bringing the specters from the Ghostbusters reboot to life.

For many scenes, including the finale battle in Times Square, actors were decked out in period garb and LED lights opposite Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones. They were then used as reference to craft the ghostly effects.

Iloura, which also contributed to “The Battle of the Bastards” in Game of Thrones, was one of many VFX sources that worked on the film. VFX supervisor Pete Travers of Sony Pictures Imageworks was another, and he explained the process in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
