Class is in session for cinematic sex ed.

A new video essay from the YouTube channel the Film Theorists explores the art and history of sex scenes on the silver screen, from the earliest known example in the 1933 film Ecstasy to more familiar movies like She’s Gotta Have It, 9½ Weeks, Boogie Nights, and Last Tango in Paris.

More than just, ahem, a sizzle reel, the video breaks down the myriad cinematographic techniques that filmmakers employ during such scenes, depending on whether they’re looking to dramatize, titillate, deconstruct — or all the above.

Watch the full video (which is racy but doesn’t contain nudity) at the top of this post.
