Three decades ago, a 5-year-old boy named Saroo was separated from his family in India after he fell asleep on a train, accidentally traveling thousands of miles from home before ending up in Calcutta. Unsure of how to find his way home, or even the name of his hometown, he lived on the streets there until he was taken in by an orphanage and eventually adopted by an Australian couple. As an adult, however, Saroo found himself wondering about his birth family’s fate, and he devoted all of his time to scouring Google Earth, searching for clues about his birthplace.

Back in 2012, Saroo’s story captivated the world and sparked headlines around the globe, and he eventually penned a book, A Long Way Home, about his search. Now, Saroo’s tale is coming to the big screen in a moving drama that’s been touted as an early Oscar contender.

The first trailer for Lion introduces Dev Patel as the adult Saroo Brierley, with Nicole Kidman and David Wenham playing his Australian adoptive parents and Rooney Mara also starring. First-time feature director Garth Davis also conducted a massive search for the young actor who would play 5-year-old Saroo, eventually finding newcomer Sunny Pawar.

Watch the first trailer above. Lion will make its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September before hitting theaters on Nov. 25.
