In one of the first episodes of <Mr. Robot, Rami Malek’s protagonist Elliot explained why he didn’t have a Facebook profile: “Because I hate Facebook.” The real-life Malek is obviously very different from the neurotic cyber revolutionary he plays on TV, but the two do share a healthy skepticism about social media.

“I’m not crazy about social media, because I think it’s a little bit polarizing,” Malek told Stephen Colbert on The Late Show on Tuesday night. “It’s difficult to figure out exactly what’s happening on social media. Things seem very manicured. I think it pits people against each other.”

As a result of this reluctance, Malek had made an Instagram profile (accumulating more than 100,000 followers) but hadn’t made a single post yet. Luckily, Colbert had a selfie stick at the ready, and together they made Malek’s first Instagram post. “The day @colbertlateshow hacked my Instagram,” Malek wrote as the caption.
