Filmmaker Jamie Kastner’s new documentary The Skyjacker’s Tale concerns Ishmael Muslim Ali, an American convicted of murdering eight people on a golf course in the US Virgin Islands. After years of trying to get his conviction overturned, he took matters into his own hands and hijacked an American Airlines plane full of passengers to Cuba on New Years Eve 1984— and got away with it. Kastner’s film recounts the hijacking, re-examines his original trial — interviewing principals on both sides — and, the director claims, reveals a gross miscarriage of justice.

The Skyjacker’s Tale is playing in the documentary section of the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival.
