For most Americans, Hawaii remains an idyllic paradise off in the distance, full of sun and surf and palm trees. Not for Amy Schumer, however. When the comedian went to Hawaii this summer to film a movie, she ended up contracting some bad sicknesses, she told Stephen Colbert on The Late Show Monday night.

“It was just rock bottom,” Schumer said. “I couldn’t speak, and I coughed so hard … I coughed so hard I fractured my own ribs.”

Thankfully, Colbert had a mug of hot tea on hand to help soothe his guest. As she sipped, Schumer said it wasn’t just the sickness that had gotten to her. The whole Hawaii experience just wasn’t her style.

“I’m from here, so I like to sit and not move,” Schumer said. “Everyone hikes there. Everyone hikes every day. They’re so healthy. Dogs hike, cats you’ll see on a hike. I went hiking, someone said ‘on your left,’ and it was a baby in a diaper blowing past me.”
