Bette Midler apologizes for offensive Caitlyn Jenner tweet
Bette Midler is in hot water after mocking Caitlyn Jenner.
In the now-deleted tweet, Midler wondered if Jenner will “go back to being Bruce” following the cancelation of Jenner’s docu-series I Am Cait. (Jenner came out as trans last year.)
On Sunday, Midler apologized for the tweet, writing that she “misread the temper of the times” and affirming her support for the Human Rights Campaign. “Sorry last tweet offended,” she wrote, calling the remark an “idle musing.”
The original tweet read: “Now that @IAmCait has been cancelled, will she go back to being Bruce? Will Kris take him back? Do I smell a re-wedding?!” Many found the statement to be transphobic and expressed disappointment in Midler, including authors Roxanne Gay and Jenny Boylan (who appeared on I Am Cait).
This isn’t the first time Midler has used her Twitter platform to mock the Kardashian-Jenner family. Back in March, the singer and actress criticized Kim Kardashian for posting a nude photo online.
I Am Cait was canceled last week after two seasons. “After two amazing seasons of [I Am Cait] it’s time for the next adventure,” Jenner wrote on Twitter. “Thank you E! & thank you to the best girlfriends I could ask for!”
