Natalie Dormer and fiancé Anthony Byrne may be totally in love – but that doesn’t mean it makes it easier to work together.

The couple recently collaborated on the script for the upcoming indie thriller In Darkness – and the 34-year-old actress revealed it was not as easy as she thought it would be.

“It’s tough!” Dormer told PEOPLE before speaking at the World Humanitarian Day event at the United Nations Headquarters on Friday. “I don’t know if you’ve ever been in a writing room but I wouldn’t recommend it with your other half.”

But as tough as it may have been, the former Game of Thrones actress is still enthusiastic about the prospect of starring in a movie she also wrote for the first time.

“I’m very excited about it because I’ve never done anything that I’ve written before,” Dormer admitted. “It was a very interesting process – we were trying to write real interesting characters, both male and female.”

The subject of gender equality is an important one to Dormer – who attended the event to speak in support of empowering and encouraging female victims of sexual and physical abuse.

The actress gave a speech in which she highlighted the horrifying conditions women all over the world live in and how there needs to be more support offered to them.

And when asked beforehand what everyday people can do to start supporting women, Dormer had a very simple yet poignant response: “It’s money and attitude.”

She added, “Support those charities that help women who are suffering from rape in the Sudan or women who are in a shelter from domestic violence up in Queens. Don’t be apologetic for the fact that local and national government needs to do more for gender equality.”

“Women should speak up for other women,” Dormer said.
