When we hear Cate Blanchett‘s voice pierce through scenes of lush landscape, we half expect it to be for a Lord of the Rings movie. In the trailer for Terrence Malick’s first documentary, Voyage of Time: Life’s Journey, she now becomes far more existential.

Empire debuted the trailer, which is a breathtaking introduction for what promises to be a cinematic treatise on humanity’s place in the cosmos. An alternate cut, called Voyage of Time: The IMAX Experiece, features narration from Brad Pitt and runs 45 minutes in length. Life’s Journey, however, taps Malick’s Knight of Cups actress for what amounts to 90 minutes.

According to the official synopsis: “Voyage of Time: Life’s Journey is an exploration into our planetary past and a search for humanity’s place in the future. Humming with the energy of nature itself, the film melds innovative special effects with awe-inspiring footage from around the globe, in search of what lasts, what endures, through time’s changing scenes.”

Assisting Malick in this endeavor is VFX supervisor Dan Glass, who worked with the filmmaker on The Tree of Life. The project was originally titled Q in the late 1970s, making this a 30-year-long journey to theaters.

Correction: The Imax Experience cut is scheduled for U.S. release on Oct. 7, though there’s still no U.S. release set for Life’s Journey. An earlier version of this story stated they share a release date.
