Ben Whishaw may soon be gearing up to go fly a kite.
EW has confirmed that Whishaw is in talks to join Mary Poppins Returns, the upcoming sequel to the beloved 1964 Disney musical. Set in Depression-era London, Returns stars Emily Blunt as the practically perfect nanny, who visits a grown-up Jane and Michael Banks after the Banks family experiences a personal loss. Whishaw would play Michael, who is now a father to three children of his own.
Perhaps best known for his role as Q in Spectre and Skyfall, Whishaw recently starred in The Danish Girl, The Lobster, and the miniseries London Spy. If Whishaw signs on, he’ll join Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, who plays a lamplighter named Jack, and Meryl Streep, who is in talks to play Mary’s cousin Topsy.
Rob Marshall (Into the Woods) is directing Mary Poppins Returns, with David Magee writing the script based on P.L. Travers’ original Poppins stories. Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman are writing the film’s all-new original songs.
Mary Poppins Returns will fly into theaters on Dec. 25, 2018.
The Hollywood Reporter first reported Whishaw’s involvement.
