Hidden Figures trailer debuts during Rio Olympics
If the athletes competing in Rio weren’t enough to inspire you, the first trailer for Hidden Figures also debuted Sunday night during coverage of the Olympics.
The film centers on the real-life story of three African-American women working at NASA who helped launch astronaut John Glenn into orbit in 1962.
In the trailer, the women — Katherine G. Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer), and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe — are seen battling race and gender stereotypes even as they helped make history.
Hidden Figures was directed by Theodore Melfi (St. Vincent) and written by Allison Schroeder, who based the script on Hidden Figures: The African American Women Mathematicians Who Helped NASA and the United States Win the Space Race. The film also stars Kevin Costner Kirsten Dunst, Jim Parsons, Mahershala Ali, Aldis Hodge, and Glen Powell, with Pharrell Williams producing and contributing music to the soundtrack.
Hidden Figures will launch into theaters on Jan. 13.
