Conan O'Brien talks to Mario's creator about the character's mustache
For a stout plumber, Mario sure has some pretty unbelievable qualities. The video game icon can throw fireballs and grow to twice his size when given the right fungus, but Conan O’Brien is most perplexed by the hair under his nose. O’Brien caught up with Nintendo golden boy Shigeru Miyamoto, creator of Mario (along with nearly all of the company’s other popular characters), to get to the bottom of why Mario rocks a ‘stache.
“The only reason that he has a mustache is because when we created the original 8-bit art, we needed to give him a nose so it looked like his face, and we gave him a mustache so you could tell where the nose was,” Miyamoto’s translater relayed.
So there you have it — if Mario was created with the clearer, high-def video game graphics of today, he might have been a clean-shaven man.
