With Kevin Smith developing 1984’s science fiction-comedy The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension for TV, this would seem the perfect time to check out — or rewatch — director W.D. Richter and writer Earl Mac Rauch’s cult film. Then again, it could be argued that any time is a good one to watch a movie in which Peter Weller plays a physicist, neurosurgeon, test pilot, and rock band frontman who battles aliens from another dimension.

Either way, on Aug. 16, Shout! Factory is releasing a collector’s edition Blu-ray of Buckaroo Banzai, which also stars Ellen Barkin, John Lithgow, Christopher Lloyd, and Jeff Goldblum. The two-disc set’s bonus features include an audio commentary with Richter and Rauch, an alternate opening sequence with Jamie Lee Curtis, and a brand-new, two-hour making-of documentary called Into the 8th Dimension

See an exclusive clip from that documentary, featuring Lithgow and Lloyd, above, and a vintage trailer for the film below.
