One of the more notable pieces of news to come from the Toronto Film Festival announcement on Tuesday is that horror-thriller The Belko Experiment will receive its world premiere as part of the event’s Midnight Madness section. The movie concerns a group of office co-workers who are forced into a sick game of kill-or-be-killed by sinister forces and stars John Gallagher Jr., Tony Goldwyn, Adria Arjona, and John C. McGinley. But what will get horror fans salivating are the names behind the camera. The Belko Experiment is directed by Greg McLean, whose credits include 2005’s infamous serial killer shocker Wolf Creek, and written by Guardians of the Galaxy filmmaker James Gunn, who also wrote and directed the 2005 monster movie Slither and penned Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead remake. So, what exactly can festival-goers expect from this collaboration?
“Belko is an incredibly crazy script by James Gunn,” says McLean. “There’s nothing else like it. Trust me. It’s a wild, wild movie. I’m so glad I got to direct it. James was great. We have a similar sensibility over the movies we like and the references we like. So, we clicked over those things. I think he’s a great writer, but he was great fun to work with, and really respectful of me taking over the project, and directing it.”
The cast of The Belko Experiment also includes Gunn’s regular collaborator, Michael Rooker.
“Rooker’s phenomenal,” says McLean. “What a great actor. He’s just a force unto himself. It’s hard to describe. Whenever he comes in, it’s suddenly ‘Michael Rooker time.’ Whatever is going on, suddenly the whole set’s about Michael Rooker — in a good way!”
