The internet’s favorite Olympian, Tongan flag-bearer and opening ceremony show-stealer Pita Taufatofua, was a very popular man on Monday’s episode of the Today show.
Taufatofua, who will compete in taekwondo, is one of only seven athletes from the small island of Tonga to compete in the Rio de Janeiro games, but he made a big impression during the Parade of Nations, in which he appeared shirtless, wearing a traditional Tongan mat skirt, glistening with coconut oil.
During Taufatofua’s appearance on Today, Al Roker tried his best to conduct an interview, but Hoda Kotb and the ladies of Today interrupted to oil him up. Later, Matt Lauer got in on the action.
In the few words that he could get in, Taufatofua discussed the moment that he realized he had become an internet sensation. “I was walking through the opening ceremony, and someone came up to me, they were just taking photos nonstop, and they said to me, ‘You know you’re trending on Twitter in every major country?'” he said. “Once I had a look, it had just gone everywhere.”
