Jane the Virgin fans, take a deep breath before reading the following sentence: Michael might be alive.

That’s right: Judging by a slew of photos posted to Instagram and Twitter as the cast reunited for their first table read of the season, Jane’s brand-new husband – who may or may not have died by gun shot in a crazy, telenovela-inspired incident mere hours after their made-for-TV wedding – might have survived.

A hard look at the evidence: First, a photo posted by the Jane writers, which shows actor Brett Dier sitting at table alongside cast mates Justin Baldoni, Jaime Camil, Yael Grobglas, and Ivonne Coll. Also: A bottle of water and what looks to be a smoothie, suggesting that Dier isn’t going to appear as some vague apparition, but rather, a character who, as suits a member of the land of the living, has some actual stuff to say. Then, there’s the caption: “All smiles on a Monday.” Does that look like a cast in mourning to you?

Next: actress Andrea Navedo posted a selfie from the table read, revealing Dier at his dorky best. Yup, that’s him all right. On the other hand, see that kooky look in his eyes – could that he be sending a code of sorts to the fans? Could it be that he’s only there to prep for a scene or two?

Unfortunately, there’s nothing to do but speculate and wait for further snaps from set as we inch toward the show’s season 3 premiere on Oct. 17. But there’s some consolation straight from from creator and showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman, who last spring, dropped some details about the season ahead. “You’ll find out right when we get back within the first act,” she told EW about Michael’s fate. Let the countdown to the premiere begin.

A telenovela adaptation, Jane the Virgin tells the story of Jane Villanueva, a virgin who is accidentally inseminated during a routine checkup.
