Barbra Streisand teases Alec Baldwin duet in new video
Few things in life are as enchanting as Barbra Streisand, but Broadway hits and the allure of movie stars come close. The legendary singer performs several collaborations with A-list stars as part of her upcoming 35th studio album, Encore: Movie Partners Sing Broadway, and now she’s giving the world a taste of what to expect from the LP with a sneak peek at her new duet with actor Alec Baldwin.
In a video Streisand tweeted Sunday, the pair can be seen belting lyrics to Stephen Sondheim’s “The Best Thing That Has Ever Happened,” which first appeared in the 2003 musical Road Show (also known as Gold!, Bounce, and Wise Guys).
“It’s a charming song, and we have Alec Baldwin, an actor who I’ve always really admired. He was perfect casting,” Streisand says of her partner. “It’s that combination with me; he’s a New Yorker. He’s from the theater.”
Baldwin adds: “Just in the way Barbra is complex in her singing, Sondheim is perhaps the most complex in his writing. Sondheim was the person who invited audiences to come to the theater and [said], ‘Let’s talk about what you’re really going through, and we’re going to sing about it.'”
Encore: Movie Partners Sing Broadway, which also features stars like Melissa McCarthy, Anne Hathaway, Patrick Wilson, Antonio Banderas, and Jamie Foxx, is available Aug. 26. Watch Baldwin and Streisand sing “The Best Thing That Has Ever Happened” in the video above.
