Between his book Modern Romance, his show Master of None, and some of his more incisive stand-up comedy bits, Aziz Ansari has become a veritable philosopher of modern love as practiced over text messages and modern technology. So it’s no surprise that when Ansari stopped by The Tonight Show on Wednesday night, host Jimmy Fallon recruited him to read some embarrassing first text exchanges between men and women.

Fallon and Ansari took turns playing each side — on the one hand, some poor lovestruck soul sending multiple earnest texts in a row, only to be greeted by indifference or snark from the other side. The best such exchange involved a typo, when Ansari read someone texting (presumably over Tinder or some other such service), “Did you fall from heaven, because based on your picture, I think you might be an angle.” Fallon read the response: “Acute or obtuse?”
