Is Rory Gilmore pregnant?!

On Tuesday, the official Instagram account for Netflix’s upcoming Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life revival series, premiering November 25, posted a new teaser image that left many fans scratching their heads. The photo features the Gilmore kitchen table strewn with familiar objects: a cup of coffee, newspapers, a plate of Pop Tarts, and… an apple?

The caption for the photo makes special mention of the apple, reading, “Pop-Tart appetizers to hold us over ’till the pizza comes. And one apple.” The comments for the photo erupted into a storm of theories and slack-jawed Emojis. So, what gives? It’s just an apple, right? Maybe not…

As Gilmore fans know, the mother-daughter duo’s diet is famously unhealthy, so any fruit or vegetable would be a strange addition to their plate. But the apple in particular has special meaning in the Gilmore canon. Back in the fifth season’s episode called “Blame Booze and Melville,” Lorelai suspects she might be pregnant with Luke’s baby when she finds herself eating an apple – and enjoying it. She tells Rory this only happened to her once before: the first time she was pregnant. Later in the episode, Lorelai discovers she isn’t pregnant, but the apple remained an infamous object in the Gilmore lore.

So much so that the moment the Instagram photo appeared, fans took to the comments, speculating if the apple spelled a new Gilmore on the way. But if so, who would birth this new Gilmore girl… or guy? Lorelai and Luke are apparently still going strong when the series returns, so is a new baby in store for the happy couple? Or perhaps Rory’s about to bring a new generation of Gilmores into the world. Rory’s love life is still a bit of mystery, but with all of her former suitors returning for the revival, could one of them end up being her baby daddy?

The apple, of course, could mean neither of these possibilities. Eagle-eyed fans have pointed out that Lorelai assembled the same appetizer plate in the season 1’s “Concert Interruptus,” which also featured a performance from 80s rock group The Bangles. So, most important of all theories, could this be hinting at another Bangles reunion?

Find out when Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life debuts November 25 on Netflix.
