What? It's short for 'Dad Bag'
Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump is having something akin to a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad week, following his criticism of Khizr and Ghazala Khan, the Muslim parents of a fallen American soldier, which is earning him face-palms and wagging fingers even from those officials within his own party. Last Week Tonight host John Oliver lit into the Donald on Sunday’s show, and now Stephen Colbert is coming after him from a familiar angle — that being his persona from The Colbert Report that he legally can’t use.
On tonight’s installment of The Late Show, once again, Colbert lays down some comedy truth(iness) in The Word, er, The Werd, recapping how Trump managed to find himself mired in a controversy that, um, trumped accusations that he is cozying up to Vladimir Putin. Colbert sneaks in a Melania dig while winking at Trump’s implication that Ghazala Khan wasn’t permitted to speak at the DNC: “Yes, Trump knows that a good husband allows his wife to say something (‘… That Michelle Obama already said,’ read the rest of the punchline).”
Responding to Trump’s tweet that Khizr Khan doesn’t even know him, Colbert quipped, “I mean, how could you possibly judge a presidential candidate unless you’ve met them? Well, I’ve met Donald Trump, so I’m on solid ground when I say: Donald, you’re being a dad bag” — (the screen reads ‘d-bag‘) — “which again, due to space we’ve had to shorten.”
