Tallulah: Ellen Page kidnaps a baby in exclusive clip

It’s been almost nine years since Ellen Page charmed audiences as a pregnant teen in the quirky, poignant drama Juno. Now, nearly a decade later, the actress is tackling parenting again — but it’s less the accidental pregnancy sort and more the impulsively-taking-a-child variety.

Page stars as the titular character in the dramedy Tallulah, a young vagabond living hand-to-mouth out of a van, and the exclusive clip above showcases a pivotal choice she makes that sets the film’s story in motion.

While scavenging for discarded room service food in a swanky New York City hotel, Lu is mistaken for a housekeeper by a spacey trophy wife named Carolyn (Tammy Blanchard) who asks her to babysit her 1-year-old daughter while she goes out on the town. When Carolyn comes back and drunkenly passes out, she goes to leave — but then the baby starts crying and, fearing for the little girl’s well-being, Lu hastily scoops her up and brings her back to her van.

What happens next allows Page to reunite with her Juno costar Allison Janney. Unsure of what to do after taking the baby, Lu brings her to the only responsible adult she knows: Margo (Janney), the mother of her now-who-knows-where boyfriend, Nico. Margo mistakenly believes the baby to be her granddaughter, and Lu doesn’t dissuade her of that notion. Based on that lie, Margo takes her in, and they begin raising the baby together.

Tallulah, written and directed by Orange is the New Black writer Sian Heder, also stars OITNB’s Uzo Aduba, Zachary Quinto, and John Benjamin Hickey. The film, which Netflix picked up ahead of the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, is now in select theaters and available to watch on the streaming service.
