Kanye West doesn’t think his ego is why some people dislike him. He thinks it’s because his life has certain parallels to one character in Meet the Parents.

In a new interview with Harper’s Bazaarthe magazine asks West and wife Kim Kardashian what the last thing they bought for themselves and each other was. “I rented an island for his birthday,” Kardashian reveals. “A far, far away place where no one can find us.” Sounds nice, right? But West doesn’t seem too pleased with her answer.

“You see, those are the type of statements that make people not like us, more so than the ‘I’m the best’ statements,” he responds. “It’s more the, ‘Oh, yeah, I just rented an island for his birthday … ‘ You know in Meet the Parents, Owen Wilson’s character? All of our sh– is like Owen Wilson’s character; he’s like, ‘This is when we jumped off Mount Everest, and we wore turtle flight suits or whatever.'”

For those not familiar with the 2000 film, Wilson plays the main character’s extremely wealthy ex-fiancé. Read more from West and Kardashian’s Harper’s Bazaar interview — which also includes the two talking about nude selfies and insecurities — here.
