Debra Messing to Gwen Stefani: Get Blake Shelton not to vote for Trump
'Please talk to your man to not vote for the person who will STRIP you of your rights,' Messing tweeted
UPDATE: Debra Messing and Blake Shelton have made peace. Shelton tweeted, “Thanks sis…I don’t endorse anybody. For this very reason.” Messing responded in kind retweeting Shelton.
UPDATE: Debra Messing has since tweeted that she “regrets” calling out Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton for comments Shelton made about Donald Trump. “My passions got the better of me,” she tweeted. “Sorry.”
EARLIER: Debra Messing called out Gwen Stefani on Twitter when she asked her to “please talk to your man to not vote for the person who will STRIP you of your rights.” Here, Messing refers to Stefani’s boyfriend country music star Blake Shelton and a recent interview he gave to Billboard, in which he appeared to defend Trump.
When asked about his political leanings he said, “I’m not going to have the political conversation with you about Trump, or about Hillary Clinton, but I will tell you this: Whether you love him or hate him, he says what he thinks, and he has proven that you don’t always have to be so afraid. A lot of people are pulling for him, no matter how much Hollywood fights it. I see people who don’t like him go and beat up people that do like him. You tell me, who’s crazy here?”
He then continued, “I probably wish there was another option, but there’s not.”
Messing, who has been vocal about her support for the Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and even appeared at the DNC to speak on Clinton’s behalf, started her response by saying, “Omg. How?”
Shelton responded to his quotes and the backlash against them in his own series of tweets on Thursday. “Hey before this gets going like it always does… I haven’t [endorsed] ANYBODY for president. And I not going to. I don’t do that s—. My comment about ‘wish there was another option but there’s not’ is across the board…period. Now go dig up another story.”
