'We're on the cusp of electing a racist demagogue, and that never ends well'
Sen. Bernie Sanders lent his show of support to Hillary Clinton on Tuesday night, just before Clinton was nominated by the Democratic party for president, but many of his supporters are still trying to feel the Bern. That was more apparent on Monday night, when Sanders devotees booed throughout the Democratic National Convention to express their displeasure with how the primaries were handled.
“There was more white booing than the Casper movie,” Late Night host Seth Meyers said on Tuesday night’s show, which was taped before the evening’s convention festivities. In a segment called “Hey!” Meyers took on the “Bernie or Bust” crowd by imploring them to think of the alternative.
“Look, I know you’re Bernie or bust, but the results are in: Bust won,” Meyers said. “We don’t have time for this. Donald Trump is ahead in the polls; the house is on fire, stop crying because we’re not putting it out with your hose. We’re on the cusp of electing a racist demagogue, and that never ends well. I don’t know which class you ditched to go to those Bernie rallies, but I have a feeling it was history.”
Noting how some Sanders supporters claimed to not know anyone voting for Donald Trump, the Republican nominee, Meyers joked, “You know you have that crazy uncle you only see at Thanksgiving? This country is about 48 percent crazy uncles, and it’s about to be Thanksgiving every day.”
“We’ve all experienced disappointment,” he added. “I couldn’t get Rihanna go out with me, but I don’t stand in the kitchen and boo my wife. At least not while she’s telling me how she plans to make my life better.”
