Being bombarded by paparazzi may be one of Hollywood’s biggest gripes, but flying under the radar can make for some awkward moments too — a lesson Lorde learned during a recent Uber ride.
Over a a string of tweets, the 19-year-old pop star revealed her Uber driver had no idea who she was, and wouldn’t stop gushing about an A-list passenger that had just exited the car. “Uber driver currently busting a nut about the fact that there was a ‘celebrity passenger’ just before me,” she wrote. “I can tell our ride, by comparison, sparkles significantly less for him.”
She then offered up a poetic take on the uncomfortable incident: “I can feel it from the back seat, his dazed glow. he’s probably now pretending that i am not here, that they are still together, and alone.”
Lorde’s story prompted fellow singer Ellie Goulding to chime in with a similar anecdote of her own. “@lorde Mine said he had someone from Ellie Gouldings band in earlier. But didn’t like her music soooo,” she tweeted, to which Lorde responded “@elliegoulding i just winced.”
Though Lorde shot into the spotlight with 2013’s Pure Heroine, her chart-topping debut, she hasn’t released a record since. In 2014, she lent “Yellow Flicker Beat,” as well as several vocal contributions, to The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1 soundtrack. She last appeared on Disclosure’s “Magnets,” from his 2015 sophomore album Caracal.
