Cats: Leona Lewis sings in new look at Broadway revival
It’s time to let the memory live again.
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s famed musical Cats has purred its way back onto Broadway, and EW has your first look at a new video montage from the revival that includes Leona Lewis as Grizabella, “The Glamour Cat.”
In the footage, which you can see above, Lewis can be heard singing the showstopper number, “Memory.” It also showcases the musical’s costumes, choreography, and other members of the feline-filled cast.
The role marks Lewis’ Broadway debut. Nicole Scherzinger previously played Grizabella in the London revival of Cats in 2014, but Webber revealed in a May radio interview that she pulled out of the Broadway production in order to appear on The X Factor.
Cats, based on T.S Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, first opened on Broadway in 1982 and ran until 2000, making it currently the fourth-longest running show in Broadway history. Director Trevor Nunn, who helmed the original production, is also steering the new revival.
“The classic Cats, which I saw when I was 9, was just so breathtaking and mesmerizing,” Lewis told PEOPLE at last month’s Tony Awards. “So it’s staying true to the original, but they’re injecting a bit of freshness into it, which I’m really excited about.”
Cats is currently in previews at New York’s Neil Simon Theatre, with opening night set for this Sunday.
