DNC: Elizabeth Banks compares Donald Trump to Hunger Games' Effie Trinket
Actress and director Elizabeth Banks slammed Donald Trump on the Democratic National Convention stage Tuesday night, comparing the Republican presidential nominee to her character from The Hunger Games.
“Some of you know me from The Hunger Games, in which I play Effie Trinket — a cruel, out-of-touch reality TV star who wears insane wigs while delivering long-winded speeches to a violent dystopia,” said Banks, before referencing last week’s Republican National Convention in Ohio. “So when I tuned in to Cleveland last week, I was like, ‘Hey! That’s my act.’”
The actress, who is serving as the evening’s host, had walked on stage applauding herself while Queen’s anthem “We Are The Champions” played — a clear mockery of Trump’s much criticized entrance to the same song at the RNC.
“I don’t usually say this about Donald Trump, but that was over the top,” Banks said when she reached the podium. “I confirmed it right now. The Trump campaign is so hard up for money, I just bought that fog machine on eBay for thirty bucks. I don’t feel good about it.”
The DNC, which earlier Tuesday officially nominated Hillary Clinton for president, continues through Thursday. Former U.S. President Bill Clinton, actresses Lena Dunham and America Ferrera, and musician Alicia Keys are among those slated to speak Tuesday evening.
