Bones pulled off its biggest twist in years in Thursday’s season finale, but plenty of fans literally didn’t see it coming.

Across certain Mountain, Pacific, and Alaska markets, the first 40 minutes of the Bones finale were preempted by Donald Trump’s speech at the Republican National Convention. The final 20 minutes then ran on schedule and without context, much to the frustration of stars Emily Deschanel and David Boreanaz. Deschanel tweeted, “Politics shmolitics they should have just forgotten about the convention and shown @BONESonFOX!!”

Boreanaz was equally displeased, tweeting, “Epic fail @FOXTV.” The actor also put his own spin on Trump’s slogan, “Make America great again,” writing to the network, “You Made America pissed off again.”

After commenting that the episode “must seem so weird” without the first 40 minutes, Deschanel complimented Boreanaz, who directed the finale, on his work, adding, “I hope everyone gets to see the whole episode.”

Read our recap of the episode here, as well as our postmortem interviews with executive producer Jonathan Collier and the actor who made a surprise return.
