Melania Trump’s plagiarized speech was the main story out of the first night of this week’s Republican National Convention in Cleveland, but it was far from the only noteworthy happening that night. Monday’s theme was “Make America Safe Again,” and most speakers took the chance to rant about imminent dangers from ISIS and terrorists and criminals and whoever else they could think of. Trevor Noah, for one, was befuddled by this.
“You guys make it sound like America is Westeros and winter is coming,” Noah said. “‘Have you heard, Jon Snow? The non-white walkers are coming!”
Noah also took one particular speaker, Milwaukee County Sheriff David A. Clarke, to task for celebrating the acquittal of the Baltimore police officers involved in Freddie Gray’s death.
“Let me get this straight, we’re talking about Freddie Gray, the guy who had his spine severed while in the back of a Baltimore police van, and that’s ‘good news?'” Noah said. “What a relief to find out no one killed him. I mean, he was killed, but no one killed him. Half of getting killed is someone killing you, so this is progress. Now we just have to figure out why all these black folks are so susceptible to dying. Get the f— out of here, man.”
