It took all of season 7 for Mystic Falls to become home again, and yet, the moment it did, Damon and Enzo hit the road. Of course, they didn’t exactly choose to leave town. Let us explain. Here’s everything you need to know before The Vampire Diaries takes the stage at Saturday’s Comic-Con panel.
Where we left off: After the twins helped open the Armory, Caroline bid farewell to Ric — at least emotionally — and rekindled her relationship with Stefan, who was stuck outside the Armory waiting to see if Damon would come out of the vault unscathed. In a last-ditch effort to save Bonnie from Rayna’s curse, Damon risked his life, entered the vault, and saved the day. However, when the vault lured him back in using the sound of Elena’s voice, he was forever(?) changed. And when Enzo went in after him, the two of them, now affected by the vault, hit the road to go on a killing spree, leaving Bonnie, Stefan, and Caroline to do everything they can to track them down. (So far, it’s been three months, and they haven’t been successful.)
What we know about season 8: To be honest, we don’t know much about season 8. So far, the only news that’s come out is that Containment’s Kristen Gutoskie will join the cast in the premiere as Seline, “a warm, nurturing nanny of two young kids by day, and a small-town girl trying to find her place in a dangerous world by night.” Other than that, fans can hold on to the fact that showrunner Julie Plec told TVLine that Stefan and Caroline might get to enjoy a bit of happiness before their relationship is inevitably tested again.
Comic-Con burning question: Is this the show’s final season?
The Vampire Diaries returns Friday, Oct. 21 at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
