If you’ve been spending the last two months replaying the season 2 finale of Fox comedy The Last Man on Earth — which seemingly bid adieu to one familiar face while reintroducing a strange one — you’re in luck: The cast and producers will take the stage at Comic-Con on Saturday to talk all about their end-times comedy. Before Will Forte & Co. make their appearance, though, let’s don our hazmat suits and remind you where things stand.
Where we left off: Clinging to a bunch of questions. For starters: Is Mike (Jason Sudeikis) a goner? Phil (Will Forte) appeared to say goodbye for good to his brother, who has contracted the killer virus that eliminated (almost) everyone on the planet. Also: What is Pat (Mark Boone Junior) planning to do to our survivors? Given that the paranoid conspiracist was riding to shore with two mystery people in hazmat suits, armed with guns, we’re guessing he’s not here for karaoke night. (Though “Falling Slowly” is always a solid choice.)
What we know about season 3: Tidbits are as scarce as humans in the near future, but here goes: Forte won’t outright confirm that we’ve seen the last of Mike, but he did tell EW in May, “I can’t imagine a better, more emotionally satisfying ending than what we did…. To bring him back after doing that, we want to be true to the viewers and not jerk them around. We would only do something like that if there was a really good reason for it.” As for who’s behind those Hazmat suits, Forte noted there are “a ton” of scenarios that the writers are considering: “We are going to have a lot of fun with those hazmat suit people, and I think it’s going to be really fun for the show.… The worst version of it is going to be great; the best version of it is going to be f—ing awesome.”
He also confirmed that the action will pick up where it left off, and that some of the future story lines will focus on the pregnancies of Carol (Kristen Schaal) and Erica (Cleopatra Coleman). “It would be scary to be pregnant in this world with no doctors,” he said. “A lot of fun and interesting stories I think can come out of that stuff.”
Comic-Con burning question: Will a drone fly into the room and drop off a hint about whether Pat was the ominous force behind the drone? And if so, will January Jones shoot it down?
